Sesame’s integrated e-Prescribe tool allows clinicians to send both digital and hard-copy prescriptions directly to local and online pharmacies. The system attaches a secure image of your digital signature to each prescription sent through the platform.
Enabling e-Prescribe
If you’re using e-Prescribe for the first time, Provider Success will send you a link to complete Plaid Identity Verification, which enables your prescribing account.
Make sure this verification is completed before attempting to prescribe.
If you’re unable to access e-Prescribe, it usually means the verification step is still pending.
Reach out to Provider Success at doctors@sesamecare.com to request a new link or confirm your status.
Sending Prescriptions
When sending a prescription, you’ll choose one of two delivery options:
Send to Patient
The patient receives a text message once the prescription has been created.
Through that message, the patient selects their preferred pharmacy for pickup.
If the medication isn’t available at that pharmacy, the patient can transfer the prescription to another pharmacy directly from the same link.
Local Pickup
Select Local Pickup if:
The patient has already provided a specific pharmacy preference, or
The pharmacy is an online or mail-order pharmacy such as Amazon Pharmacy or Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs. A list of commonly used mail-order pharmacy addresses is available here - you may have to edit the zip code in local pharmacy search to match the online pharmacy's address.
When a prescription is sent to a local pharmacy, Photon transmits it both electronically and via fax to ensure receipt.
If a pharmacy reports that they have not received a prescription, it’s usually an error on the pharmacy’s end. In rare cases, the pharmacy may request that you call to confirm or resend the order.
Provider Tip:
If you work under a supervising physician, it’s best practice to include their name and contact details in the pharmacy notes field when submitting prescriptions. Some pharmacies require this information to complete fulfillment.
Program-Specific Workflows
Certain subscription programs—like Success by Sesame and Everyday Rx—have slightly different e-Prescribe interfaces to match each program’s features.
You can find details about those prescribing flows in the respective subscription articles:
Reordering & Medication History
To reorder a medication you’ve previously prescribed:
Go to the patient’s chart → Medications tab.
Locate the medication you’d like to reorder.
-
Click Reorder this Prescription.
(This option is not available for program-specific workflows.)
Review the details, select a pharmacy if needed, and click Send Order.
All past and current prescriptions are viewable in the patient’s Medications tab and timeline, including:
Prescription date
Pharmacy information
Status of each order
Troubleshooting & Cancellations
If a patient enters their name or date of birth incorrectly, contact Photon Support at support@photon.health, or have the patient text 513-866-3212. Photon will work with the pharmacy to correct the record and will escalate back to you if the order needs revision.
If you need to cancel a prescription after it’s been submitted:
Contact Provider Success at doctors@sesamecare.com or Photon Support.
Photon typically responds fastest, but either team can assist—even after the prescription has reached the pharmacy.
Controlled Substances
Controlled substances cannot be prescribed on Sesame.
Patients are informed of this restriction during booking, but some may still request these medications during visits. Controlled substances are not advertised or permitted on the Sesame platform.
More About Photon
Sesame integrates with Photon Health to enable licensed providers to issue legally valid prescriptions using the national NCPDP SCRIPT e-prescribing standard.
How prescriptions are delivered:
- Electronically integrated pharmacies: Sent directly as a standard eRx into the pharmacy’s system.
- Non-integrated pharmacies: A fax notification is sent with key prescription details. At the bottom of the fax (in the footer), there is a short, easy-to-type secure link that allows the pharmacy to access and review the full electronic prescription online .
All prescriptions include standard required elements (patient details, medication, directions, prescriber information, intended pharmacy). The secure online view mirrors the exact prescription and does not alter it.
Photon does not change prescribing authority, create new prescription types, or require pharmacies to adopt new software. It uses established industry workflows to ensure reliable prescription delivery.
